The particles form a regular, dense pattern that Mercedes says triples the paint's scratch resistance, although they didn't invite us to do our own scratch test. The paint-bonding agent's molecular structure is infused with ceramic particles, less than one-millionth of one millimeter in size. One new feature available on the C-Class (and shared with the 2005 SLK) is nano technology paint. While the standard suspension changes are subtle, the sport suspension option gets you stiffer springs and shocks versus the old C-Class Sport for a more distinct choice from the base suspension. AMG goodies include a sport steering wheel with Speedshift manual-control buttons for the five-speed automatic, a choice of two styles of alloy 18-inch wheels, AMG Alcantara sport seats, and an AMG instrument cluster.Ĭhassis upgrades for the 2005 C-Class include new radius rod bearings for the three-link front axle, which have 22-percentsofter settings and a modified spring link bearing for the multilink independent rear suspension. The newly installed V-8 makes 362 horses at 5750 rpm and 376 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. Use of the slightly larger CLK coupe's front-fender innards help provide a 0.3-inch-longer nose on the C55 to make room for the handbuilt 5.4-liter V-8, which replaces the previous C32's supercharged V-6. Its grille is shaped differently, too, although the variance is so subtle that you'd have to put them side by side to notice. The latter's hood has a slightly different slope from those of the standard C-Class sedan, wagon, and Sports Coupe. The bread-and-butter C-Class ranges from a hatchback and European taxis to the new V-8-powered C55 AMG, which has model-specific track and sheetmetal.

An updated, facelifted C-Class lineup is helping lead the charge. After a few years of cutting corners to make more-populist cars, the automaker appears to be striving for a higher level of quality and substance once again. The burden of Mercedes-Benz's considerable weight is on the C-Class's shoulders.
